Dr. Lulu's Family
“Mom, Dad, I have something to tell you, I am gay.”

A powerful combination of words many parents don’t ever want to hear, or like my friend Geanna said, she ‘dreaded” hearing after her beloved 11-year-old daughter, Jackie told her she felt she was transgender. “I feel stuck in this body that is not mine”, she had confided.

That was 16 years ago, Jackie was her only daughter of four children.

Today, both Geanna and Jack are estranged and have not spoken to each other in years. Geanna simply couldn’t deal with it. She had dreams and plans for her beloved daughter, and the thought of losing her to something she did not know and understand was a bit too much.

"Jack" left home when he was 17 and has never come back.

In my case, I knew my sweet son was gay even before he turned 3. I had my suspicions but never said anything about it. When he turned 12, I approached the topic, and received an “I am not sure”, but, at the age of 16 he came out officially.

However, last summer they came out as non-binary, and somehow that affected me a lot more than I care to admit. I struggled with using the right pronouns and worried about their safety even more, with the prevalence of homophobia.

While our relationship is thriving, I know there are many parents like Geanna who struggle with raising their children. I have compiled a FREE PDF (available with your subscription to my newsletter) of 10 things that helped me as I navigated my way over the years, I hope you can find some answers in my words…

Peace Still.
